Dental Hygiene For Kids

Your child’s oral hygiene maintenance is as important as their overall health. Emphasis and education of your child on the importance of oral hygiene maintenance should start early for them to practice a lifetime of excellent oral health.

Oral Hygiene for Infants

Milk teeth are formed by the time a baby is born but the teeth start to break through the gums around 6 months of age.

  • Wipe your baby’s gums with a soft cloth after feeding.
  • Use of a soft tooth brush is recommended.
  • Take the bottle away after your baby as he/she finishes drinking milk to prevent early childhood caries.
  • As milk teeth start to erupt, brush teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Amount of toothpaste must be the size of a rice grain.
  • Schedule your child’s first dental appointment before their first birthday or after his or her first milk tooth is visible, whichever comes first.

Oral hygiene for children (3 and above)

By the age of 3 kids have all of their milk teeth in their mouth. Around 6 years of age milk teeth start to fall off one by one giving space for the permanent teeth. Therefore to ensure that the permanent teeth erupt at the best health the milk teeth have to be taken care of from day one.

  • Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • Be sure your child brushes for at least 2 minutes twice a day
  • Teach your child how to floss in order to imbibe good oral health habits.
  • Remindyour child to clean the back teeth as well.
  • Visit the dentist every 6 months.
  • Make a note of their habits if they have any like thumb sucking/ tongue thrust.

Oral Hygiene For Preteens

  • Your child will be more aware of his/her appearance.
  • Encourage them to maintain good oral hygiene.
  • Make sure they brush twice a day for at least two minutes
  • Remind them to floss everyday
  • In case of mal alignments of teeth schedule an appointment with Orthodontist to check if they need braces.
